WHAT DOES STEAL, KILL AND DESTROY MEAN?

May 1st, 2008 · No Comments

JOHN 10:10: The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
This is a scripture that has over the years, intrigued me very much. I have often wondered; what does the devil have to destroy, after he has killed me? I often thought this scripture was just to show exactly how bad the devil really is. He is terrible, don’t get me wrong. He is the father of lies and no good is in him. But the wording of this scripture always told me that there was something more. It was not that he was going to be able to destroy your family because of your death. Although this is what kind of domino effect he hopes to have in all his works. But I now understand this scipture to be something total related to each individual believer.

It is not talking about the natural realm; but rather speaking in terms of the spiritual realm. How we can recognise this, is to read the whole verse. John 10.10: The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Here Jesus is contrasting Himself and Satan. Jesus shows what He sets out to accomplish when He comes and He shows what the Devil sets out to accomplish when he comes.

Now realise that it is by the works of our faith that we are led by the Spirit and only when we are led by the Spirit; can we have life and have it more abundantly. Now I am not saying we cannot have life and life more abundantly in the natural. No, rather I am saying that it is like the basic cause = effect rule. When we are walking by faith being led by the Spirit; we not only experience life in the Spirit realm, but also the natural. The word life used here in Greek is zoe, and it refers to the God kind of life. So we are supposed to experience the God kind of life in the spirit and natural realm.

The Devil on the other hand though only comes to steal, kill and destroy. He does not come otherwise; that is why it says he comes not, but to steal, kill and destroy. Now if we look at this scripture form the spirit realm, what now does he have to steal, kill and destroy? We will address the questions one by one.

What can the devil steal from us? The abundant life Jesus has given us. But, you and I need to understand that it is the root of something that allows everything else to flourish. The devil though is not ignorant to this understanding. So what is the root of the abundant life? The works of faith, the devil knows if he can steal your faith and the actions of your faith, you’re a goner!

The devil understands that it is by faith that everything in this world works and that it is how God works. He knows Hebrews 11.6 better than the majority of Christians! So he knows if he can steal your faith, he has just stolen everything God has given you.

Understand that when the devil begins to steal your faith from you it allows him to work on your born again spirit. This is what he is out to kill! He is out to bring you back to him; to kill your born again spirit! He can then again make you a slave. But the devil understands that it may take sometime to do this. But, slowly but surely he will bring you back into bondage. When he steals your faith of Jesus; your spirit once again becomes dead. Then there is no stopping him, because he has just taken away your freedom!

Now we can better understand what he has left to destroy after he has stolen from you and killed the “real” you! He then comes and deceives you, puts you under bondage to many things and tries to make sure you do not come in contact with any Christians. He then starts to destroy your natural life one piece at a time; destroying your life! So realise what the devil and his demons are trying to do everyday and know what he is coming to steal, kill and destroy!
