Prophecy is much like a word of wisdom. But, there is a major difference and this is what we will discuss in this teaching. What prophecy is in the simplest form is supernatural utterance in a natural tongue. That is, it is a word given to us in a known tongue. It is given in our language of English or whatever language you speak here on this earth. However you want to interpret it, it is God speaking through the Holy Spirit to your spirit in your language. We understand better what prophecy is by looking to both the Greek and Hebrew definitions of the word. In Greek prophecy means to speak for another and in Hebrew prophecy means flow forth.
Secondly, what is prophecy to do? It is to edify, exhort and comfort, (I Corinthians 14:3). This is how you can tell if a particular prophecy is false right away. If it does not edify, exhort and comfort, it is false and is nothing but a lie. It is either given just by that person, or it was given to that person by the devil. This is how fortune tellers work, by a demon of divination. Acts 16.16-17 gives us an example of this:
16And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: 17The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
Demons can see the future, but realise they can only see their future. A Pastor once taught in the Church I was attending that our lives can be lived on two different wheels. One wheel is the life that God intended on us living and the other is the life wheel the devil wants us to live on. Demons can only see the life wheel of the devil and they can not foretell the future of a born again Spirit filled believer. I have actual proof of this in my own life. My Grandmother (who was not a Christian at the time) once went to a fortune teller. Maybe she went just because of curiosity or maybe she wanted some actual advice, I don’t really know. My Mother at the time was saved, and obviously covered by the blood of Jesus.
So when my Grandmother went to see the fortune teller and about her future and others in her family, the fortune teller was able to tell the futures of all the family, except one, my Mother! So understand if prophecy is does not exhort, edify and comfort, it is not from God. It is from another source. True prophecy only brings good news. It exhorts, it edifies and it comforts. The word exhortation in Greek means to call closer. This is what God does with prophecy, He calls us closer. Isn’t that wonderful?
So how does prophecy come? It is God supernaturally manifesting Himself through the Holy Spirit to the real you; your born again spirit. There are different types of ways prophecy can come. It can come through God’s word (the Bible) and put words in your spirit and they will become like a bubble wanting to burst on the inside of you. But sometimes it will not have this feeling of overflow on the inside of you. Many times only a few words may come to you and you will have to step out on faith speaking those words and the rest will follow. Another way prophecy can come is through anointed songs or preaching. Realise though that prophecy can come any way God wants and it is only by the Holy Spirit’s will.
Now I want to give an example of how prophecy differs from the word of wisdom. I will use Noah as the example. In Genesis 6 God told Noah that there was a flood coming. This was prophecy. God also told Noah to build the ark and gave the exact dimensions; this was a word of wisdom. Now I know, when God tells you a flood is coming you’re going to build a boat.
But it may not be this obvious in other areas where prophecy is given. That is why it is so important to be open to the Holy Spirit and listen to all He has to say. Because you do not want to miss anything, especially when it is a word of wisdom He wants to give to you. Just be open and allow Him to flow and you will be taken care of and will be totally blessed. And it is of vital importance that you remember that prophecy is only to exhort, edify and comfort. It comes for no other reason and is given only to help the Church.
