FREEDOM

June 1st, 2008 · 3 Comments

Freedom is something we are born to have. We, from an early age want to do what we want, when we want to. We were created to rule and reign, that’s just the simple fact. Freedom is what human society is supposed to represent, but sadly it does not. Christianity also is supposed to represent freedom, because that is exactly what it is, freedom.

So why was I asked the question, why does Christianity condone slavery? This person drastically misunderstands the Bible you say? Well, yes. But, why is it that he does misunderstand it to this point? That is a better question to ask our-selves as believers. Now, you may be saying I could care less about anybody else’s opinion and neither should you Viktor. We know the truth and if others want to take a distorted look at it, that’s their problem.

But, you see that is exactly what makes Christianity, Christianity. It is the love and caring for others, which shows what we believe in, is truth. And are we not follow the example and the command of our great saviour Jesus? Did He not say in John 15:12 to love one another as He loves us? Thus, it is very important to explain Christianity does not stand for slavery, but rather for freedom.

You can only know and experience freedom if you know the truth about the matter or activity that you are partaking in. How will you know freedom, if you have never experienced it? And is freedom really doing what you want? The Bible clearly tells us in John 8:32 that we must know truth, if we are to be set free. But what is truth? Would not the truth, be what the world really is?

Jesus said that He was the truth the way and the life. He said in John 8:36 that if the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. So why the question: Why does Christianity condone slavery? Well, for one, there are slaves in the Bible. Two, this person knows me and knows that I do not go to the bars or anything typical of a 22 year-old. Now, I do not know if this is or was his true meaning when he asked this, but I think it is important to address.

Like I have told him on many occasions, I am actually free to go to the bars, smoke the drugs or be with any girl. But, how can I say this? My saviour died for me. Shed his blood, and took away all my sin. Why would I go live like the world? Because I am free to do whatever I want. Jesus set me free and when He did that, He did not say that I had to serve Him. As Christians I do not think we fully grasp the fullness of just how much of a price are great saviour paid. We do not fully understand what we have when we are standing under Him.

Romans 8:1 gives us full understanding of our freedom. 1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. But now you say, yes we are free from condemnation, but only if we are following after the Spirit. Well no, it does not say that. The original Greek reads verse one simply as: There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. Who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit was put in by the translators, not by Paul.

So ask yourself, are you in Christ Jesus? If so, you are free from condemnation. What is condemnation exactly? Condemnation is to be judged guilty, that you are unfit for use (for God to use you in this case), and that you should be doomed for punishment. But, Jesus set you free! And the minute you accepted Him as your Lord and Saviour, you admitted that He did go to the cross, taking your old sin nature with Him. Because you believe in Jesus there is nothing you can do to get into condemnation. It’s not what your actions are, it what Jesus’ actions were that matters. He was judged and because you are “in Christ” who have been judged already. Realise you’re free and the only way you lose that freedom is by renouncing Christ.

We are not here because we are free, we are here because we are not free. Only those who want to be free will be free.
